"Cageprisoners' work gives us hope" (Pervaiz Mohammed, brother of British detainee, Rengzieb Ahmed) |
| British National Tortured in Pakistan Arrested on Arrival in UK |
"He wouldn’t sleep... He used to keep a knife under his pillow. He told me that they beat me up many times; 'they tortured me.' I asked him, 'how did they torture you?' He said, 'They used to electrocute me, hang me upside down, beat me up and dunk my he! ad in a bucket of cold water.' Sometimes they would put poison in his food- enough to make him ill. When he was first released he couldn’t walk straight, and he used to get scared with the noise outside..."
Rengzieb Ahmed is a British citizen and resident of Manchester. In April 2006 he was again arrested, by plain-clothed security agents while travelling on a bus in Pakistan. After months of questioning and torture at an undisclosed location by CIA and ISI agents, he was taken into official custody by Pakistani police and transferred to Adiala jail in northern Pakistan, where he was held without charge or consular access. On Friday 7th September, Rengzeib was released from custody and deported to the UK, only to be re-arrested on arrival. Cageprisoners spoke with Rengzeib's brother, Pervaiz, in this exclusive interview about his brother's plight.

In this exclusive first-hand account from his cell in Houston’s Federal Detention Centre he describes the circumstances around his migration to Somalia, the tragic death of his wife Umm Muhammad, his subsequent arrest in Kenya and imprisonment there and in the US.

"I preferred starving as a human being than living like a caged dog" (Abdul Hamid Moosa, released from detention in Ethiopia) |
| Slow Death of Man in Guantanamo |
Unclassified statements from 59 year old father-of-four Saifullah Paracha, currently being detained at Guantanamo Bay, reveal that his health has seriously deteriorated and could lead to his premature death if his pre-existing heart, prostatic and diabetic disease are not treated urgently.
Saifullah, a Pakistani national and US green card holder, was kidnapped on 5th July 2003 whilst enroute to Bangkok on! business. He has since suffered three heart attacks, one of which occurred during interrogation - two in Bagram Airbase and one in Guantanamo Bay.
His lawyer Gaillard T Hunt suggests his medical treatment is at best incompetent and at worst negligent.
"Several of Paracha's brothers and sisters have died of cardiac problems before reaching 65. Paracha is nearly 60, so the problem is not one to be ignored. Paracha has been having fainting spells, so we know the problem is worsening. He couldn't submit to a cardiac catheterization at Guantanamo because the rules require all prisoners in the hospital to be shackled to the four corners of the bed. The cardiologist said this was dangerous for a heart patient, but the prison administration would not compromise. The statements filed in court to assure us that Paracha is getting proper treatment are not signed by the doctors. We have to assume the doctors are as disturbed by the situation as we are. T! he doctors told Paracha that they were acting as military men ! first, a s doctors second. Paracha is not the worst case. There are people at GTMO literally dying from lack of treatment."
Since the declaration of the "war on terror" post 9/11, various sources have reported the active participation of US military health and medical professionals in a variety of serious offences in the prison of Abu Ghraib in Iraq and Guantànamo Bay in Cuba.
Family and former detainees are deeply concerned over the health of Saifullah and demand that he be given immediate emergency medical attention that could very well save his life.
Saifullah Paracha’s wife Farhat, said “About my husband's health, if anything goes wrong the entire responsibility is the American Government's.”
Zahra Paracha, Saifullah’s daughter, said: “I always had a very strong gut feeling that one day, my whole family will come together and we'll be like any other normal family. Now I keep feeling, ‘what if he meets God before us?’ I think I have ! as much of a right as any American kid to meet my parent.”
Former detainee Moazzam Begg, spokesman of CagePrisoners states: “Although it is asserted by the US military in Guantanamo that prisoners often receive 'better medical treatment than they would at home' it is evident through cases such as Mr.Paracha's that health matters are attached to certain prerequisites. Often, as was the case during my time in US custody, prisoners' level of medical treatment would be dependant upon their level of cooperation with interrogators. Simply put, failure to comply could mean failure to receive treatment.”
Saifullah Paracha’s statement can be read in full at: http://www.cageprisoners.com/downloads/paracha_statement.pdf
| Urgent Action for Tunisians Released from Guantanamo | On 17 June, the USA transferred two Tunisian natio! nals, Ab dellah Ben Omar al Hajji and Lutfi Ben Swei Lagha, from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the custody of the Tunisian government. Amnesty International fears that they are at risk of torture or other ill-treatment in Tunisia.
The US Department of Defense publicly announced the transfers of the two Tunisian nationals to Tunisia, and also of four Yemeni nationals to Yemen, on 19 June. Amnesty International has no further information on Lutfi Ben Swei Lagha, who had no legal representation while he was held in Guantanamo. Abdellah al Hajji’s US lawyer, who was not informed of the transfer until 19 June, had only been able to meet with his client once during his detention in Guantanamo. During that meeting, Abdellah al Hajji had expressed his fear of being forcibly returned to Tunisia.

Black Support for Obama - BPS Poll Temporary Results
The nation is searching frantically for numbers on Black America's support for Barack Obama who has entered the Democratic race for the office of the presidency. The first place they look is to Black leadership to see if any support falls from the camp. However, the nation (white media) neglected to look in the direction that will actually count, which is the people, Black people themselves. Well, Black People Speak have answers.
We asked Black America the following questions:...[more]
Blacks and the Police - BPS Poll Results
In an on-going trend of police violence against Blacks, BPS decided to ask the Black community its opinion on the relations between Blacks and the police. The purpose is to gather data in various areas of that relationship to gauge a clear understanding of the level of justice Black America perceive they get from police.

- Screening/Q&A: Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 - Session 1 @ 7:00 p.m. - Q&A to follow with Christine Christopher (writer and producer) and Carvin Eison (director)
- Credits: Written and produced by Chris Christopher. Directed by Carvin Eison. Narrated by Roscoe Lee Browne.
- Synopsis: JULY '64 tells the story of a historic three-day race riot that erupted in two African American neighborhoods in the northern, mid-sized city of Rochester, New York. On the night of July 24, 1964, frustration and resentment brought on by institutional racism, overcrowding, lack of job opportunity and police dog attacks exploded in racial violence that brought Rochester to its knees. Directed by Carvin Eison and produced by Chris Christopher, JULY '64 combines historic archival footage, news reports and interviews with witnesses and participants to dig deeply into the causes and effects of the historic disturbance.
- Buzz: This year's FESTIVAL DIRECTOR'S CHOICE. With narration by Emmy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated actor Roscoe Lee Browne, JULY '64 reveals new information about the Rochester Riots and provokes the question of why race, and the entitlement it does or does not carry, remains a potentially destructive issue today. This film is THE MOST ESSENTIAL to understanding the crux of this year's festival.
